Abstract

The displacement-pressure formulation of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) in liquid storage tanks frequently results in nonsymmetric system matrices characterized by real eigenvalues. This research investigates the application of the load-dependent Ritz (LDR) method to the time-history analysis of such nonsymmetric systems, systematically assessing its accuracy and computational efficiency relative to direct integration (Direct) and the conventional eigenmode-based modal analysis approach (Modal). Comprehensive seismic response analyses were conducted for two liquid storage tanks featuring free surfaces and varying aspect ratios. The Modal closely replicated the Direct integration results but required a substantial number of eigenmodes to achieve convergence. By contrast, the LDR method constructed a significantly smaller, excitation-dependent basis, thereby reducing the computational cost of basis generation and overall analysis time, while still accurately reproducing the peak responses of mid-height hydrodynamic pressure, base shear, and overturning moment. However, diminished accuracy was observed in scenarios dominated by long-period sloshing effects, particularly for tanks with extended sloshing periods. These findings demonstrate that the LDR method constitutes a computationally efficient alternative for impulse-dominated time-history analyses of nonsymmetric tank FSI systems, provided that careful consideration is given to basis size selection, center frequency, and the incorporation of low-frequency components when long-period sloshing responses are non-negligible.
