Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the principal factors influencing the seismic capacity of non-seismic steel factory buildings in Korea. The investigation evaluated the impacts of column base-connection modeling, design wind load, design crane load, and site class, utilizing effective peak ground acceleration as the principal index of seismic capacity. Analytical models that incorporated the rotational stiffness and moment resistance of exposed column base connections exhibited limitedly enhanced seismic performance relative to those employing idealized pinned-base assumptions. While the inclusion of design crane loads resulted in increased member cross-sections, its influence on overall seismic capacity was comparatively minor. In contrast, elevated design wind-load levels led to substantial increases in member sizes, thereby augmenting both the lateral stiffness and strength of the structural system, and consequently improving the seismic capacity of the buildings. Site class was also found to be a significant determinant, as variations in soil stiffness altered seismic demand, with softer soil conditions yielding lower effective peak ground acceleration values. Among all parameters considered, modifications in structural member dimensions and properties associated with design wind-load levels were identified as the most influential for enhancing seismic capacity within the scope of this study.
