Case Study on the Seismic Capacity of Non-Seismic Low-Rise Residential Buildings With Rectangular Hollow Structural Section Columns in Korea
Abstract
This paper provides a detailed case study evaluating the seismic capacity of two representative non-seismic low-rise lightweight steel structures in Korea, specifically located on site class S3. The first structural model was developed based on standard design documentation, while the second incorporated structural attributes identified via a comprehensive survey of actual building construction practices. The seismic performance of both models was assessed using linear analysis and nonlinear static analysis methodologies. For each analytical approach, the effective peak ground acceleration (EPGA) of the demand response spectrum was progressively increased until the analytical model reached the limit state as defined by the relevant procedure. The critical factor influencing seismic capacity in both cases was the welded beam-to-column connection at the column tops. Results demonstrated that the seismic capacities required to prevent collapse ranged from 1.3 to 1.4 g under linear analysis, but reduced significantly to between 0.55 and 0.94 g under nonlinear static analysis. This discrepancy is primarily attributable to uncertainties associated with the response modification coefficient in the linear analysis, as well as the explicit consideration of post-yield behavior and deformation capacities of welded connections in the nonlinear assessment.
