Evaluation of Seismic Isolation Transmission Characteristics and an Acceleration Demand Model for Internal Equipment in Electrical Cabinets
Abstract
This study investigates the seismic isolation transmission characteristics and develops a regression-based model for predicting the acceleration demand of internal equipment mounted within electrical cabinets subjected to Uniform Hazard Spectrum (UHS)-based seismic excitations. Shake table experiments were conducted using four UHS scale factors—0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0—under both isolated and non-isolated conditions. The cabinet reference response was defined as the maximum acceleration recorded among all cabinet measurement points, while the envelope response for internal equipment locations was determined as the greater response between two monitored internal locations. Experimental results revealed that the acceleration response of internal equipment typically exceeded that of the cabinet reference, suggesting that reliance solely on cabinet measurements may underestimate the seismic demand on internal components. Although seismic isolation at the cabinet base was effective in mitigating the cabinet reference response, this attenuation was not equivalently observed in the internal equipment. The residual transmission ratio demonstrated that, even after isolation, internal equipment experienced a relatively higher acceleration compared to the cabinet reference. These findings indicate that cabinet base isolation alone is insufficient to substantially reduce the seismic response of internal equipment. Furthermore, a log-log regression analysis identified input intensity and isolation condition as significant predictors for internal equipment acceleration demand within the experimental range. The study concludes that, to ensure the protection of internal components, cabinet base isolation should be complemented by targeted local vibration reduction measures for internally mounted equipment.
